Public Space is seen as a pointer to societies.
In democratic societies, public space, as a global social and cultural space, provides educational and formative structures. But how do dictatorships use public space, how do they set and establish power? How do the mechanisms of actions of democratic societies differ? In this Summer University mensch macht raum Patricia and her international studends dealed with the power practices of dictatorial penetration of Nazi-architecture in Berlin into all areas of life ( s. MACHT.RAUM. GEWALT. Akademie der Künste). „We perceived the dictorial atmospheres and their effects with our bodies. We experimented with artistic positings: to set democratic atmospheres by our bodies using performing arts methods of dance, sound, moving + visual image“.

The main differences between democratic and dictatorial urban architecture
can be seen in public spaces. In democratic settings, squares and streets are typically designed to encourage openness, accessibility, and interaction, fostering a sense of community and individual freedom. In contrast, dictatorial architecture often uses monumental, imposing designs for public spaces, with wide, straight streets and large squares meant to control movement, intimidate, and reinforce the power of the state.

In Dictatorial Spaces
the atmospheres are often oppressive, controlling, and overwhelming- creating an atmospheric density that restricts people’s behavior and encourages submission or self-censorship. The space is experienced as a form of power exertion, where the physical environment regulates and monitors the movements of individuals.
Democratic Urban Space
is designed for openness and participation, with open, inviting atmospheres that encourage people to move freely, communicate, and interact- promoting a sense of belonging, freedom, and respectful exchange.
